Challenging imposter syndrome and embracing the unknown

In this Blog, Business Development Manager, Jenna Herlingshaw shares her key takeaways from Season 2 Episode 1 of Mind.Set

The second season of our Mind.Set podcast opened with a standout conversation featuring Sam McAlister, a brilliant guest to kick off the new season!

One of the biggest takeaways for me was Sam’s perspective on imposter syndrome. Simply put, she doesn’t believe in it – and I understand why. She described that nagging feeling of not belonging, of being “outside the club” because of your background, your intelligence, or other differences, and turned it on its head. Her message was clear, if you’ve worked hard to be in the room, then you deserve to be there. That shift in thinking really hit home for me and helped me challenge some of the stories I’ve been telling myself for far too long.

Another powerful theme was Sam’s willingness to walk away from situations that no longer serve the life she’s working to build. This takes guts, and it’s something I’ve been brave enough to do, too. The way she dives into the unknown, treats every opportunity like a gift, and still leads with kindness really speaks to the kind of grounded, grateful mindset I respect. Her values and approach to life truly resonated with me.

I also appreciated her emphasis on the value of soft skills, often underestimated, but absolutely essential. The ability to connect with others, to be compassionate, and to show up authentically truly matters; and although these qualities aren’t always easy to practice, they create space for stronger, more meaningful connections.

Putting up a front can be exhausting, and I’ve learned that being your most authentic, open, and honest self really enhances your quality of life.

Overall, I appreciated Sam’s honesty, her no-nonsense way of breaking things down, and her reminder to trust your gut. A truly inspiring start to the new season.
